How do I connect to my Multidrive from a personal or off domain Windows computer?

For more information about what the Multidrive is, please see the information included in this article: What is a Multidrive share repository?

Connecting to the Multidrive from a personal machine or an off-domain computer requires a secure connection via the campus VPN server.  Instructions for setting up your secure VPN connection for Windows are available here.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Connect to the secure campus VPN server.
  2. Click or tap the Start/Windows menu icon in the bottom right corner of your screen
(Shortcut: press and hold the Windows Key  on your keyboard and hit the E key, then skip to step 4)
    .

  3. From the Start/Windows menu, open type “File Explorer" and the menu should change to show you something similar to this:

  4. Click the File Explorer icon to open File Explorer.
  5. With File Explorer open, locate the “This PC” or “My Computer” icon on the left hand side of the window.  Right-click this icon to bring up the options menu.

  6. From the options menu choose “Map network drive…”

  7. In the Map Network Drive window, select a drive letter you would prefer to use from the drop down.  In the folder box type: "\\multidrive.mtu.edu\multidrive". Check both boxes: “Reconnect at sign-in” and “Connect using different credentials” and click “Finish”.

  8. A box will appear asking you to enter your network credentials.  It is very important that you include the “MTU\” before your user id.  (example: MTU\joeuser). The password you use will be your campus ISO password, the same one you use for accessing your Gmail or MyMichiganTech.

  9. If successful, your Multidrive will now be mounted as the drive letter chosen in step 7, and you will be able to see it from inside any application used on your computer or from Windows Explorer.

Please note: Your Multidrive will only function while connected to the internet with a working secure VPN connection.  If you disconnect from the Internet or wake your device from sleep, you will likely have to reconnect the VPN first before being able to access the Multidrive.
