Poster Printing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

01

How large can the plotter print?

Our plotters are capable of printing on paper rolls up to 42 inches wide. A minimum of 24” is required on at least one dimension of your poster. We recommend that one of your file dimensions be either 36” or 42” wide to maximize paper when printing, as we charge by the size of paper used. We can trim your poster to a particular size upon request for an additional fee.

02

Who can place an order?

Orders placed through Michigan Tech IT must be from a current Michigan Tech student, faculty or staff member. Orders submitted through the online form must be submitted from either 1) a computer on campus connected to the Michigan Tech network, or 2) a computer connected to the Michigan Tech network through a VPN connection. Posters submitted from off-campus will not be accepted.

03

How do I submit an order?

To submit an order, please use our poster printing order form. You will need to include information about the file you wish to have printed and payment and contact information.

04

Which paper finishes are available?

We stock matte and semi-gloss paper. Our plotters are capable of printing to other paper types, which if desired, must be provided by the user; the paper roll must be between 24 and 42 inches in width.

05

What formats can I print?

We accept the following formats: PDF, Publisher or PowerPoint. Please convert files to one of these formats. To maintain the integrity of your file, the documents will be printed as submitted (we will not alter or convert files). For best print results, the file should be at 300dpi.

06

How much does it cost?

Poster pricing is as follows:

  • Matte paper: $5.00/sq ft
  • Glossy paper: $6.50/sq ft
  • Optional tube for poster: $2.00

You will receive a confirmation email with the final cost when the print is ready for pick-up. Payment must be made prior to picking up your poster; a proof of payment receipt will be required.

07

Is poster printing included in my HuskyPrint printing account?

No. The large-format printing is a separate service from HuskyPrint. It requires a separate payment.

08

How do I pay for my poster?

You have two choices on the poster ordering form:

  1. Charge to a University Index
Enter the index for billing, e.g., AXXXX, DXXXX, HXXXX. Note: research indexes, i.e., E2 or E4 accounts, may cause a delay in getting approval for billing; we do not recommend you use these indexes, especially if your project is time-sensitive. Please contact IT Help if you have questions or concerns.
  2. Pay with cash or check at the Library and IT Service Center
If you choose this option, you will receive an invoice via email for your poster. You must show a receipt as proof of payment when you pick up your poster. Posters will not be released or delivered without proof of payment.

09

Where do I pick up my poster?

Finished posters will be available for pickup at the Library and IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library. If you choose to have your poster delivered, you must be present at your specified location during normal business hours to receive your poster.

10

How long does it take?

We require print requests to be submitted at least three (3) business days before the poster is needed. You will receive a confirmation email when your order is submitted, and you will receive an email when the order is ready. Keep in mind that at different times of the year, poster demand can be higher (senior design projects, enterprise expos, etc.). The more lead time you can provide, the better.

11

What if I have a printing emergency?

If a poster is needed in fewer than three (3) business days, please call IT Help at (906) 487-1111 for assistance.

12

Can I print anything I want?

No. The printer is reserved for academic uses only.

13

Do you offer poster mounting services?

No. At this time Michigan Tech IT does not offer poster mounting services.

14

Whom do I contact if I have any questions?

If you have any questions regarding poster printing, contact the IT Help Desk at it-help@mtu.edu or 906-487-1111.
